Watch one hard Georgetown storm from the porch and your gutters will grade themselves. Drip edge or gutter apron directing water into the trough instead of behind it. That last one is the quiet detail, because water tracking behind a gutter rots fascia for years before anyone sees it happening.
Guards against oak and pecan drop
Guards are a canopy question. Under the mature oaks of Serenada or the old pecans around Old Town, open gutters can fill in a single season, and quality micro mesh buys real relief. On the young tree streets of the newer west side communities, guards are mostly optional for now. Skip the cheap foam and brush inserts either way; they tend to become part of the clog they were supposed to prevent.
The last 6 feet decide everything
A perfect gutter system that dumps at the corner of the slab has merely organized the problem. Every downspout needs a plan: an extension, a pipe run, or a buried drain that discharges well away from the foundation, downhill where the lot allows. Splash blocks are a starting point, not a plan. Size to the roof, not the neighborhood.

The common rule of thumb is at least 4 to 6 feet from the foundation, and farther is better on expansive clay. A splash block alone rarely gets water that far. Extensions or buried drain lines do the real work of moving roof water beyond the soil that swells.
Overflow concentrates roof water in a narrow band of soil against the slab. On shrink swell clay that band expands while drier soil nearby does not, and the uneven movement works the foundation season after season. Gutter maintenance is among the cheapest foundation protection available.
